Land Clearing Springfield MO arranges home site clearing for people building in the country around Springfield: clearing the house pad, the driveway, the septic area and enough yard to work in, then grubbing out the stumps and roots and leaving a rough-graded surface for the builder. It is the most involved kind of residential clearing, because everything that is going under a foundation or a drive has to come out of the ground, not just off it.
Clearing and grubbing a half-acre pad runs $1,000 to $5,000; leave roots and buried stumps under a slab or a driveway and they rot and settle, and the fix is a $2,000 to $5,000 regrade before the concrete goes in, or a cracked slab after.
Typical price
$1,000 to $5,000 for a half-acre pad
Clearing a half-acre home site typically runs $1,000 to $5,000 and a full acre $1,200 to $8,000 (HomeGuide, November 2025). Leveling a small, mostly level home site runs $2,000 to $5,000 on top, more with rock. A geotechnical report, if the builder wants one, runs $1,000 to $5,000.
Get a price: (417) 759-5914Signs the site needs full clearing, not just mulching
- The house, garage or drive will sit where trees stand now
- Stumps and roots are in the footprint of anything built
- The builder or lender wants a cleared, graded pad
- A septic site has to be tested and laid out in the trees
- Old fence, wire or rubbish is buried in the brush
- The pad area slopes enough to need cut and fill
The order the work happens in
- Lay out the site. Mark the house, garage, drive and septic area, and the trees that stay, before any machine starts.
- Call Missouri 811. Have underground utilities located before anything is grubbed.
- Pull the permits. A grading permit from the county outside city limits; the state land disturbance permit if the site is over one acre.
- Install erosion control. Silt fence along the downhill edges goes in before the ground is opened.
- Clear and mulch. Brush and small trees are mulched or cut; usable logs are set aside.
- Grub and root rake. Stumps and root mats come out of the pad, drive and septic area.
- Rough grade. The pad is shaped for drainage away from the house, ready for the builder.
Grading permits for a home site
Grubbing stumps out of the ground is land disturbance by any definition. Greene County requires a grading permit for any non-agricultural land disturbance and asks for a copy of the state land disturbance permit on sites over one acre. Christian County, which covers Nixa, Ozark, Clever and Sparta, has the same structure under the name soil erosion control permit. Inside a city's limits, the city's rules apply instead.
Building in a mapped floodplain needs a separate floodplain development permit in both counties, and in Greene County existing ground cover stays in place within 25 feet of a sinkhole's flooding area during construction.

Call (417) 759-5914Rock, chert and the pad
Most home sites around Springfield are silt loam over clay with chert gravel through it, and south toward Ozark and Sparta the soils are mapped as gravelly. Expect the root rake to bring up rock as well as roots. Large boulders and ledge rock are where clearing turns into excavation, and a contractor will usually price that separately once they see what is there.
What stays, and what it costs to keep it
Trees kept close to a house pad need their root zones protected from the machines, or they decline over the next few years. Fence off the trees that stay at the edge of their canopy. It costs a little more time during clearing and saves a removal bill later.
Questions people ask
How much does it cost to clear land to build a house?
Clearing a half-acre home site typically runs $1,000 to $5,000 and a full acre $1,200 to $8,000, with $2,000 to $5,000 more to level a small, mostly level pad (HomeGuide, November 2025).
What are the signs a building site needs grubbing, not just mulching?
If anything will be built where trees or stumps stand now, the roots have to come out. Roots left under a slab, footing or driveway rot and settle.
Do I need a permit to clear a home site in Greene County?
Yes, in almost every case. Grubbing disturbs the root zone, so Greene County's grading permit applies outside city limits, plus the state land disturbance permit if the site is over one acre.
Who pulls the grading permit, me or the contractor?
It varies. Settle it in writing before work starts, along with who installs and maintains the silt fence.
Can I keep some trees near the house?
Yes. Mark them before clearing and fence off their root zones out to the edge of the canopy so the machines do not compact or tear the roots.

- Grubbing and root rakingGrubbing is the part of clearing that happens below the surface: stumps and roots out, so the ground can be built on.
- Acreage clearingMulti-acre jobs are priced by density and access, not just size, and they get cheaper per acre as they grow.

Tell us what is growing and how much of it
Say roughly how many acres, what has taken over (cedar, honeysuckle, brush, saplings, a grown-in fence row) and what you want the ground to become. You will hear which method usually fits and what it tends to cost per acre before anyone drives out.
